]]> The inspiration for this piece was the Cajita, an Afro-Peruvian percussion instrument. I developed ideas from the Festejo style and mixed them with irregular phrasings and Jazz harmonies. It is a great theme for the Ania Paz Trio to perform, since everyone has a moment to express himself/herself deeply. I love the way that Christoph evolves his drums solo beyond the Cajita pattern and how Carmelo makes his bass sing and creates exciting spaces.

]]> This piece was composed during the lockdown because of the pandemic, while I was still living in Peru. There is something magical about being able to compose under these circumstances, since it gave me a sense of freedom in spite of not being able to go out. I tried to convey a message of hope. The power of music went even further, since its remote recording was streamed by the Gran Teatro Nacional on occasion of International Jazz Day and I was extremely moved by the reaction of the audience. Apparently we were all needing such a powerful art as music and it could make us feel so much better. It was very especial to me when I could perform this piece live for the first time in Berlin with the Ania Paz Trio.

I composed the first part thinking about various note groupings, looking for rhythmical combinations that would fit together despite its irregularity, like when diverse people co-exist peacefully. In the second part I purposely left out chord symbols, offering with a few notes harmonic freedom to improvisers. I like very much the subtlety of not being obvious. The Ania Paz Trio expanded these concepts creating extremely contrasting atmospheres.
